Lone Eagle Flying School is operated by the Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc and is located at Clifton, South East Queensland, a beautiful part of Australia.

With a spectacular rural environment, students have the best of all conditions for training in either the Jabiru or Drifter.

In 1976 the Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc formed in Toowoomba as a social general aviation and vintage aircraft orientated club.

With an ever-increasing number of members building and owning General Aviation, Vintage and Recreational aircraft the Club adopted the Clifton airfield, 40 km south of Toowoomba, as its prime operating site.

The clubs Lone Eagle Flying School was opened in December 2002, offering Recreational Aviation Australia accredited training in two club owned Austflight wire braced Drifters. These aircraft are renowned throughout the outback as a reliable workhorse for mustering and general station property use.

The uninterrupted view from the pilot’s front seat in the Drifter is incomparable as paddocks of sorghum, corn, flowering sunflowers, ploughed fields and newly planted crops just appearing, pass beneath us offering magical photographic opportunities.

In January 2006 the school commenced using the latest fibreglass composite construction aircraft. This Bundaberg designed and built Jabiru recreational aircraft and Jabiru engine has changed aircraft design and performance and offers excellent reliability.Jabiru are sold world wide and is a true success story.

Conversion flying, advanced training and private hire is available as well as offering a much cheaper alternative to general aviation.

The Club has established on-field facilities including classroom, a briefing room, clubhouse, toilet/shower facilities and aircraft workshop and several hangars, thanks in part to various community grants received by the club.

In recognition of community support and grants, the club is offering youth aged 15 to 21 who are looking at aviation as a career, sport or hobby. The chance to apply for the annual Darling Downs Sport Aircraft Association Inc. recreational aviation flying scholarship is offered each year.

The scholarship is valued in excess of $4,500 with applications closing on a date to be fixed each year.

Usually the first or second Sunday of March, the club’s major yearly event, the annual Fly-In, is held and is open to the public, the location being the Clifton airfield, 6km west of Clifton alongside the Clifton-Leyburn Road.

The fly-in has become widely known and well-attended by repeat aviator visitors with over 100 aircraft from near and far filling the Clifton skies.

For more information on the club, flying school, scholarship or the fly-in contact the club chief flying instructor Trevor Bange on 0429 378 370 or visit our website at www.loneeagleflyingschool.org.au.
